Can thrombolysis be used for deep vein thrombosis?

Yes: Depending on the severity of the blood clot, thrombolytic agents can be given either systemically (through an iv) or directed at the clot itself via a catheter. Some data support better outcomes when they are directly aimed to bust open a clot where it exists, but this is dependent on the expertise of the center you are being treated at. In general, thrombolysis is reserved for severe cases.

Yes: Currently, most protocols for the treatment of DVT do not include thrombolysis unless the clot is very extensive.
