Inflammation: the condition is an inflammation of the soft tissue at the edge of the ribs.  Usually treated. With anti inflammation medicine, possibly exercises.  Can take 2-4 weeks to resolve.

NSAIDs: A common treatment is Ibuprofen which treats the inflammation that causes the pain.

NSAIDs: Many will improve with aspirin, ibuprofen, Naproxen (all over the counter); there are also prescription anti-inflammatory medications. If you use the over the counter, read the package instructions and warning. See your primary provider if it does not get better.

Topical Ice: Initially topical ice is probably the best choice. If after a few days this is not resolving, a doctor with the appropriate training could consider doing a steroid injection in the affected cartilage.

Pinpoint the source.: Find a doctor who will locate the exact source of your pain. X-rays and possibly CT can show if anything obvious is going on there. Injection of steroid can sometimes relieve pain.

Rib/breastbone joint: Costochondritis is pain in the joints where your ribs meet your breastbone. Causes: heavy lifting or intense exercise; any illness with lots of coughing/sneezing; blow to your chest. Local treatments include creams [over the counter capsaicin, Aspirin or rx diclofenac], Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen or prescription pain relievers. Gentle stretching or heating pads may also help.

Yes: Costochondritis inflammation can be reduced through placement of localized needles and use of major acupuncture points.  I am often able to relieve the pain of a fractured rib with one ear "rib point". No, seriously - 1 needle. I am amazed every time - so are the patients. I wish i knew more about acupuncture when my rib was broken.

i have costochondritis from years of working out. went a little too heavy last friday. having sternum pain hurts to the touch and in occasion hurts when i cough. even lying down makes it worse. ice or heat therapy for it?

: Strenuous workouts with weights can result in separation of a rib from the sternal plate, causing the pain described.  If the pain persists, see a physician for a chest x-ray to establish this cause.  Best is to stop lifting which may allow the rib to reattach to the sternum.

Cure ? Rx yes: It starts with why/ avoid. Nsaids, injections, and finally surgical excision. B sure & see a thoracic surgeon b 4 invasive rx. Good luck! b sure 2 b patient & give each rx time 2 c how u do.
