Start slow: You don't need to run to lose weight. Even walking will help you lose weight. In the beginning, walk for very short distance, take break and then walk again and slowly it will improve. Also, optimize the COPD with medications and smoking cessation.

Salty taste causes: First you must differentiate salty and metallic taste. If more metallic, then mouth bleeding or medication side effects should be considered. Most salty taste due to dehydration so try hydrating if so. Otherwise, consider postnasal drip, and some rarer causes like smoking, sjogrens disease, MS, and even mild stroke. You are best off consulting with your regular doctor but I hope you feel better;)

GERD Lung infect: Some with GERD get acid into lungs, and aggravate asthma.  I would recommend putting the head legs of your bed on 8 inch blocks (Bed Bath Beyond) to see if that helps GERD Lung Asthma. Gravity never sleeps. Also get your BMI down to 25 and much may go away. COPD may be related to smoking. If that's the case, one must stop smoking... yesterday. A primary care doctor can evaluate the issues mentioned, and refer to specialists as needed. Be sure to have very healthy lifestyle habits.

Need to see Doc: Yes, he should his doc or a lung specialist, lethargy and weight loss is concerning. I do not know if a cat scan of the chest is necessary to exclude any lung mass. Lethargy can result if he is retaining carbon dioxide because of severe copd. Work up is needing for his copd, weight loss and lethargy including lung function tests.

a few months ago i developed excess phlegm in lungs and it has become a nuisance. i am a healthy 59 year-old, fit and a total non-smoker. i live in los angeles. i don't know how i could have developed symptoms that are similar to a type of copd?
