Hard work...: Developing the abdominal muscles requires lots of exercise... Sit-ups, crunches, leg lifts etc., however, you will not see your abdominal muscles i.e. "6-pack" unless you lose body fat are become incredibly lean.  Good luck!

It could be: Hernia, abdominal or pelvic tumor, or, as you suggest, just muscle.  In any event, show it to a doctor, so that the exact cause could be determined.
