A day or 2: Steroid usually starts to work in about 6 wks but it may take 2-3 days to provide optimal benefits. If you have a contact allergy, avoidance of the allergen is the key.  Most of the time , topical steroid will work for this condition without the potential side effects.

Yes : Contact dermatitis is a very common medical issue. Normally there is some sort of trigger that causes your body's immune system to over react.  Depending on which part of the body received the trigger is where the manifestation of the skin inflammation normally occurs.  In fact, sometimes there are things that do not trigger a reaction the first time but after several exposures it can intensify.

Many: Any topical products can trigger dermatitis, lip balm, gloss, lipstick and facial products. Eczema can also affect the area if other skin lesions are present on other parts. Also, chronic nasal congestion and mouth breathing causes the skin to dry up and flake.

i've had pin head like rash on my ankles for about 1 wk. dr. said contact dermatitis, i think petechae. no other symptoms. when should i worry?

Rash: If it is petechiae your doctor would have told you it petechiae.  If it spreads then it is a concern and  needs to be worked out

Probably not : Related.  White spots inside the mouth could mean a condition called leukoplakia, a precancerous condition.  So have an oral surgeon or head & neck surgeon look at it.

Get it checked: Might be perioral dermatitis. If it is persistant or reccurent see a dermatologist.

Foods and lip balms: Look at any lip balms that you use as well as foods. If the irritant is removed the rash should go away within a couple of days.

Contact dermatitis: The dermatitis could be caused by the food but her drooling may alsobe a problem.
