Psyllium: Taking fiber capsules such as psyllium husks keeps the bowels moving while not entering the blood stream.  Fish oil is also very helpful and the dha component would be good for the baby's brain.

take 10mg celexa a day and just took 4 tbsp of milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) for constipation.  just saw on drugs.com there's a moderate interaction. am i okay?

Yes.: You're on low dose of celexa. Just be cautious on milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) use.  It's not good to use large amounts of milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) at any time. The interactions you saw are very rare, and usually requires that you have electrolyte abnormalities that are not common at your age group.   Senna S is a vegetable laxative that is safer overall.

Talk to your PCP or: prescriber of medication. To help relieve constipation, remember to hydrate well, as dry stools tend to impact more, and cause constipation. Also, you can use a bulk laxative, or more vegetables (rough fiber), or stool softeners. If it's a chronic problem, your PCP needs to get involved, and you should discuss your concerns with her/him. See what's the easiest,safest alternatives.

Bowel activity: Your bowel activity is regulated via autonomic tone, and neurotransmitter balance is part of this.  Cholinergic impulses can make your bowel contract and move stool along.  If anything disturbs these impulses, your bowel will become sluggish.  Amitriptylene has strong anti-cholinergic properties -- so at a high enough dose, your bowel activity slows down.  The result can be constipation.

Start simple, but...: Docusate (per PDR) helps moisten &amp;soften hard, dry stools. It is not a true laxative, but facilitates natural defecation, usually within 12 to 72 hours. This is safe &amp;available for anyone over 2, &amp;assumes normal GI anatomy without inflammation, stenosis, extrinsic or instrinsic obstruction. Please note that change in bowels is a "red flag", like weight loss or blood in stool, that needs evaluation

Avoid constipation: Hemorrhoids are exacerbated by constipation and the "pushing" necessary.  Foods high in fat tend to constipate you.  Foods high in fiber favor looser stools.  Fruits vegetable, whole grains are excellent sources of fiber.  Also, fiber only works if u are well hydrated.  Drink plenty of fluids to keep stools soft.  Most fissures will heal with a topical cream./  if not, surgery can help.  See a doc.

working w docs but is there any other drug besides paxil (paroxetine) that doesn't cause lots of weight gain and major constipation? i tried lexapro, not good.

Bupropion: Bupropion or Wellbutrin (bupropion) is the antidepressant thought to be associated with less weight gain and, fortunately, fewer sexual side effects as well. In addition, an older class of anti-depressants, tricyclics including amitriptyline, do not typically cause weight gain. Finally, a less often used class of anti-depressants, MAO inhibitors, may be worth consideration. Work with your doctor. Good luck:)
