how does dr. determine fibromyalgia? i have strange pains constantly.  can fibromyalgia cause visual disturbances?

Exclusion: Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion.  After all other conditions causing that spectrum of symptoms are eliminated, fibromyalgia is what is left.  Diagnoses are made using testing that is 'above' standard thresholds.  Things below those thresholds, but which cause legitimate symptoms are what is left.  Fibromyalgia does not affect the eyes although sufferers do have ey problems.

chronic migraine diagnosed by neurologist . 7 weeks pregnant and constant severe headache and visual disturbances , lightning type zig zags when outside and random floaters . last pregnancy headaches disappeared so unsure what to do ? nothing helps?

Accepted Answer

: Most of the usual prescription migraine agents are unsafe during pregnancy, but could consider some OTC preventatives such as riboflavin, butterbur, magnesium (if blood levels low).  Have had some success in stopping the headache by use of 100% oxygen inhalations.  Discuss this with your neurologist.

after 4 week really bad spell of ongoing visual disturbances and constant severe headache been diagnosed as a flair up of my chronic migraine . my question is , is it rare to have an ongoing severe headache for so long and still be a migraine ? scary?

: Please see the Emergency room, an imaging study may be indicated. An uncontrolled migraine is possible and a Neurologist may advise treatment. Keep well hydrated, rest,ibuprofen is sometimes helpful. Watch for signs of dizziness, imbalance and please see acute care.

Vague complaint: "visual disturbances" is a vague ; generalized complaint ; can be caused by so many things you could publish a book about them. I would see your eyecare doctor to take a more thorough history ; have complete exam to try to narrow the cause list. Rx is based on the etiology of the symptoms.

Migraine?: Possibly, complicated migraine.  Is the vision blocked by loss on one side, are there shimmering lights, or bright spots?  Is the headache unilateral?  But at age 45, also consider a blood vessel issue, such as carotid stenosis, or transient ischemic problems in blood flow to brain.  Talk to your doctor about some simple screening tests.
