Dentist w/ experience in the pediatric population are very experienced and - next to a parent - they have all the reasons in the world to be very careful. Ask for reassurance since your worries are important too - even if unneeded. Get instructions for before/after and good info. Best!

In proper hands no: Oral sedation should be preformed under a protocol that places the kids safety first & the procedure 2nd. If so the oral sedation is a minor issue for most kids.Things like having a nurse  specifically assigned to monitor the child's airway & level of sedation are important. Using meds that can be reversed if needed is also helpful. Ask about the safety procedures involved as you consider it.

Side effects: 14% drowsiness, 10% headache, 8% dizziness, 5% nervousness, 5% nausea, 5% vomitting. Caution of use needed if patient is suicidal, drug dependence, sleep apnea, respiratory disease, impaired gag reflex. Please review with your dentist to evaluate what is est for you.

Pill vs. IV: Oral sedation is  a process where you take meds in pill form prior to your dental procedure and you are carefully monitored in the office. The alternative is IV sedation where a line is established and meds are given that way with similar monitoring. The convenience of not having the IV is offset by the certainty of a pathway to quickly administer reversing meds if needed. Both have their place.

i am43 year old female who just had teeth extracted under oral sedation. dentist said my heart rate was double what it should be (110)  is that okay?

Elevated hr: Normal heart rate is 60 to 100. Should be on the low side during surgery when you are sedated. Would go to your doc and get a holter monitor.

YES: Yes usually is used in children but can be used in any uncooperative or anxious patient for IV medication.

Several types: Anything from nitrous oxide to pills which lower your level of anticipation as well as participation in the experience.  Discuss with the oral surgeon which is best for you based on your medical history.
