: The frequency of conjunctivitis (pink eye) recently has increased in much of the US. The reasons are not known. Probably you have either a recurrent allergic problem (it's the time of year for pollen, respiratory allergies, etc) or were unluckily exposed to viruses that cause it. For sure HIV is not the problem. Keep in touch with your doctor for diagnosis and treatment advice.

When caused by allergies, the eyes will almost invariably itch, may be watery, and could be puffy. Chronic redness, etc: This is an allergic based condition with chronic changes on the inside of the upper lid.  Commonly in contact wearers with allergic underpinnings.  The eye will b e somewhat red, there will be secretions and irritation.  The ophthalmologist will evert the upper lid over a cotton tip applicator and note enlarged papillae coating the surface of the conjunctival lining.  This is treatable.

Bacterial can occur from excess growth of skin bacteria and poor eyelid hygiene. Other common causes are chronic contact lens overwear, chronic allergic conjunctivitis, and swimming in contaminated waters.
