i have noticed an increase in the amount and intensity of "eye floaters", to the point that it is constantly distracting when outside in daylight or working on a computer screen. could this be an issue?

Yes: See an ophthalmologist to rule out bleeding inside the eye.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

No: Concentration often causes suppression of the natural blink reflex resulting in drying of the surface of the eye. This can result in blurring which may be relieved by resting the eyes or using artificial tears to lubricate the ocular surface. In such cases, diffusion of the light coming into the yes can accentuate the appearance of floaters already present.

can eye strain from excessive computer time at work prematurely age eyes and cause eye floaters?

Accepted Answer

No: The clear gel that fills eyeball is normally attached to all parts of the inside of the eye.  As we get older it can become more liquid (watery) and detaches from the back of the retina causing flashes & floaters.  This can indicate a retinal tear. As the retina detaches, change or loss in your side vision is the next symptom.   Computer unrelated. U should see your eye doctor to check the retina.

: Your retina has to be checked by an ophthalmologist and would in all likelihood require pupillary dilatation.

Don't overuse: Excessive staring at a computer screen will result in severe fatigue and blurring of vision.  Shorten exposure times, use melanin filtered reading lenses, avoid over-bright screens should help.  Keeping eyes rested and moisturized is helpful in reducing symptoms of severe eyestrain.

Dry eye: Usually, when visually concentrating on something like a computer screen for extended periods of time the eyes may become dry and blurred causing a sensation of scratchiness.  Try some artificial tears regularly and see if they symptoms persist.

Accepted Answer

Perhaps: If you require correction (glasses, bifocals, contacts. ...) and are not wearing  these while at the computer you may have eye strain or even develop headaches.  You should be checked by an eye doctor.  Also dry eye could cause these symotoms - they can check for this too.
