i would like to know the main differences between flu and common cold , symptoms , medications , and procedures ? thanks

Fever, body aches,: a true influenza has sudden onset, true fever (over 38.5 C), severe muscle/body aches, headache, nausea and cough. It  also may be accompanied by diarrhea.  Usually you feel awful and not able to function. Because the flu weakens you so much, it is common to have a pneumonia soon after the flu in many cases.  A cold will rarely have a true fever over 38.5 degrees c.

: If you have upper respiratory tract symptoms, please have a COVID 19 screening test, even if you have been vaccinated. Discuss home test kit with your physician. Stay well hydrated, rest, monitor temperature and use nasal saline spray. Watch for signs of difficulty breathing, prolonged cough or fever.

Chicken soup deconge: The old standbys are Tylenol, decongestants,  
Chicken soup.  There is no immediate need for antibiotics

is it good to give antiallergy medication to my infant during common cold?

Accepted Answer

No known benefit: Antihistamines have a drying effect on any mucous production and will thicken secretions. For many years they have been used to "dress up" kids & make them look less sickly (draining nose, etc.)they have no known benefit to the child during a cold & may thicken the mucous to the point it is harder to cough out.

It can: Some people get diarrhea briefly with their upper respiratory illnesses ("colds").

what medication can i take for a common cold if i am pregnant

Accepted Answer

NONE if possible: A common cold really does not need any treatment--just time.  But if you are really misearble then tylenol (acetaminophen) is the first line otc medicine then maybe a cough medicine (plain robitussin).  It is recommended to just 'target a symptom' and not take a mixture of drugs (e.g. Nyquil, dayquil, contac....).

Yes: Sinus pain is typical, among others for sinusitis, viral or bacterial with referred (from another site, teeth, ears, etc) pain also seen in frequent cases. Colds can involve sinuses at times.

is runny nose/post nasal drip a common acute hiv symptom or is it the common cold? i tested negative for hiv on day 22, 30, and day 137 post exposure using elisa 4th gen blood drawn from lab and im concerned that i am seroconverting now at 22.5 week?

: No. Acute HIV does not normally cause nasal congestion or drip. Your test results prove you did not catch HIV. Believe it and please stop asking similar questions. Thanks.

my babies complain of common cold how can i treat them without medication ( they are 6 months ) there is no fever just runing nose and congestion?

Accepted Answer

saline: Cold meds we use as adults or with older kids reduce drainage by using meds that dry ; thicken the drainage.Babies are dependent on narrow nasal passages that will block with thickened drainage. Your best rx for infants is to use generous amounts of saline nose wash and occasional suction to keep their nasal passages clear. Clean it as often as needed ; avoid all the stuff for old kids.
