Coma: Obtain physician opinion on chances of recovery and also consider your dads wishes in account whether he wants to be on life support or not. Basing on that you and your family decide. If there is reasonable chance of recovery with good functional status then it is wise to wait and see.

They are sedated: When someone is put on the ventilator, we usually keep him sedated, the level of sedation varies based on the underlying illness,  but in most cases we keep it light so the person is able to open eyes and communicate, in certain cases, we need deep level of sedation and the patient would not be able to communicate.

A : A person on a ventilator (a machine that pushes air into his or her lungs) is usually very ill and would not be able to communicate very well, much less sit up in bed.  However, that's not always the case. It is certainly possible for a person to be awake, alert, and aware, and yet not have the strength required to breath independently.  In such cases, the person could definitely communicate (by writing notes).

Yes: Life support is exaclty that - support. While miraculous, our medical ability to support this wonderous state of being we call "life" is still limited.  Eventually even with "full life support" the organs of the body will age and/or break down beyond our ability to support their function and the person will die. How long this will take depends on each person's unique situation.
