Usually not: by a colonoscopy we usually can't tell if you take too much laxatives, however in some people the colon becomes "black" from longterm laxative use (melanosis), but this is benign without clinical significance.

Coordinate: With your surgeon & your gastroenterologist. Maybe wait 4-6 weeks after surgery, but would be best to get the approval from your surgeon who knows your condition in detail, before having colonoscopy.

Maybe: The colon it self only feels pain through stretch.  So it depends partially on the shape of your colon and the skill of of the colonoscopist.  So it is possible under ideal circumstance to have no sedation.  But usually pain and sedative medication is required.  The amount required and therefore your levell of awareness will depend on how much pain you are having.

It sure can..: Colonscopy is a direct visualization of the inside of colon via a camera and so parasites attaching to the colon wall can be seen and thus diagnosed. For examples, hook worms and giardia etc..Adhere quite well to the walls and so the prep does not clean them out, leaving them to be seen by the colonoscope. Not a pretty sight! if you are concerned, speak to your doc. Good luck.

Not a disease: There is no test for it, because it doesn't exist (despite what you might read on less reputable websites).

Maybe: That is not a good decision because it may hinder your gastroenterologist's ability to view all of your colon properly. However, inform your gastroenterologist so they are aware and can manage it or reschedule you.

: Hard part of a colonoscopy is the prep the day/night before;drinking lots of fluids with a medication that causes the person to have many stools so the intestinal tract is clear of stool so doctor can see the intestinal walls clearly.Procedure is easy,quick &amp; painless.Patient is given medication to put them to sleep and then it's over when they wake up after.Need a ride home b/c of med sedation.

my parent had a positive fit/polypectomy 10 yrs ago. he was told he was too old for a follow up colonoscopy until now, when a proper referral was made. he is now in his 80s and really does not want to go through with it. is a fit test an alternative?

: Usually colonoscopy is not routine beyond 75 years. However a person who has polypectomy should have colonoscopy 3 years after.
If that is negative then FIT can be done as a alternative  . The FIT is not a substitute in a person who had polyps and younger than age 75. The colonoscopy be done at 3 years following removal of polyp and if it is negative then one more time after two years.And then FIT

can a dr. detect anal cancer through a colonoscopy?

Accepted Answer

Likely yes: As before the colonoscopy is done, a digital rectal examination is performed to visualize & palpate the area. Sometimes a biopsy of a concerning area is also needed though. See & ask your own gastroenterologist to get a better answer to this question as to what they saw during the exam.
