Chronic symptoms: Your symptoms appear chronic and definitely need to be further investigated. An infection does not appear likely. While your family history is suggesting a malignancy, your symptoms are not typical of cancer, but rather alternate conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease. Work up will be best directed under the care of a gastroenterologist who can also perform tests as needed.

Generally: Depending on a patient's overall health, once or twice yearly physical examination, basic blood tests, maybe yearly colonoscopy. Blood CEA testing sometimes. Also depends on the stage & grade of the cancer at the time of diagnosis. X- ray or ct scan not a routine usually unless there are clinical concerns.

Depends: If your gm is the only family member with colon cancer, then you should begin screening at age 50 and then every 10 years if normal. If 1 or 2 adenomas <1cm = 5 year followup. If 3 adenomas or 1 adenoma >1cm = 3 year interval.

my husbands mom & dad have had colon cancer. should he be avoiding high fat and chargrilled meats as a risk factor? what other lifestyle modifications should be taken to reduce risk?

Colonoscopy: He should get a colonoscopy at an ten years younger than the youngest age at which one of his parents was diagnosed. 
What you suggested about diet modification is appropriate, but colonoscopy is imperative.

Depends: Depends on familial risks of  colon cancer and any inherited disorders linked to the possibility of colon cancer such as polyposis conditions. Generally, risks of colon cancer are higher after age 50. A cleveland clinic site states that less than 2% of colon cancer occurs under age 40. Even less common to have colon cancer in age 30's or younger.

my grandmothers mom had colon cancer in her 70's. my grandmother is still alive and mom has no risks but should we be screened early because of this?

Accepted Answer

No: Screening for colon ca starts at age 50.  If there is positive family history in first degree relatives - parents and siblings, then screening starts at age 40 or 10 yrs younger than the affected family member, which ever comes first. Since grand mothers mom is not considered a first degree relative, no reason to screen early.

Change in level: Changes in the level of CEA are more useful for monitoring the course of disease than one reading. There is wide variation in CEA levels in patients with colon as well as other cancers.

Of course......: It is always possible to have a serious medical issue without any symptoms... that why you're having a colonoscopy! To allow your gastroenterologist to check for any signs of cancer before it becomes advanced and life threatening. High blood pressure and diabetes often don't have symptoms, but both can take a toll on your health and kill you. Early detection and treatment is key to a long life.

Yes: Usually adult children. The youngest patient I have seen in my practice with a family history of colon cancer, was first diagnosed at age 18.
