have difficulty with consistent bms. i was told by a dr, for a week to take miralax on day 1 and on day 5, and to take 4 colace each day along with the miralax on day 1 and on day 5 for a week. i am not a dr, but isn't that amount of colace excessive?

Drs advice: The amount of any given medication is titrated by the prescribing physician according to the patient's individual needs. Please call your physician and ask your question of him/her. Your physician can tell you why he/she feels that this is an appropriate dose to treat your problem.

what is the difference between peri-colace, amitiza, (lubiprostone) and miralax?

Explanation of lax: colace (docusate sodium) is not a laxative, just a softener-acts a litle like adding slipperyness to stool so it comes out easy-no stimulants
miralax is a lavage, so it just goes thru your pipes and takes everything with it. so it acts like a laxative but not by stimulation of the intestines
amitiza (like Linzess) simply interferes with absorption of water from the colon, making the stools more moist

good morning doctors! i have once in awhile but somewhat consistent bouts of constipation. my dr. suggested benefiber daily along with taking miralax or colace. assuming this works, how do i know when it's ok to reduce or stop these, or do i not stop?

Constipation: As your Physician knows your medical history, your medications, and your life style, and as he/she advised OTC's to help you, your Physician should be the practitioner to answer your question.

Yes: No contraindication to taking both of these together.  Don't venture to far from a bathroom.  Good luck!

Yes: But if you need laxative for more than 2 weeks please consult your M.D.

i take colace & miralax (polyethylene glycol) daily - occasionally 2 tsp of calm powder. when i do, i see black floating drops that leave orange oily residue??? what's that?

Not certain.: An oily residue may indicate that CALM may be interfering with your intestine's absorption of dietary fat.  Magnesium can react with other substances in the intestine.  There is NO evidence that a person eating a normal diet needs additional magnesium and no evidence that Calm has any positive effects in a healthy person.  If it made my stool look like that, I personally wouldn't use it.

can i take miralax long term while taking prednisone 2 mg for pmr i was told to take daily 17 grams for chronic constipation.also taking colace. thank you in advance?

Accepted Answer

: Make sure you drink plenty of water daily while on Mira lax. It is an osmotic like polyethylene glycol which works by pulling water in your stool from the colon wall. It has no action on the nerve endings or the muscles of the colon hence you can take it long term. It has no effect on the intake with prednisone.

intractable pain, scs implanted, high morphine equivalent for survival. severe constipation.switched to relistor (methylnaltrexone). worked 3 times, now 7 days can't go. was on 12 osmoprep, 2 miralax & 3 colace.what now?

Narcotic bowel: You have serious narcotic-induced constipation from the morphine. I see this a lot and usually add magnesium citrate to what you're already taking. It's pretty strong and should work.

i have diarrhea and not many solid pieces of stool. i go like this more at night. i feel something hard that won't come out, but i still pass gas and diarrhea. i take colace, and i will take miralax soon. is this serious?

: You are young to be sufferng from hemorroids, but whenever you feel something has changed in your body it is a good idea to have it checked out by your local physician. Chronic gastro intestinal distress is a very good reason to seek advice. but we can't help over the net. Best wishes.

Up to your doctor: Talking with your own doctor about this will yield more personalized results -- it looks like you've had quite an extensive workup of your GI complaints.  Being on chronic laxatives is likely to be unhealthy for you in the long run.  Colace (docusate sodium) is a stool softener, not a laxative -- but some say it causes cramping. Hoping you and your doctor can arrive at a helpful plan.
