i read that coconut oil is not good for people with diabetes. is this true?

AHA recommended diet: The american heart association (aha) recommends that saturated fatty acids be less than 7% of daily calories.  Coconut oil is a saturated fat, therefore a similar diet would also be recommended for those with diabetes. So one would conclude that coconut oil is not good for people with diabetes.

I am not aware: Of any pros or cons to coconut oil.  Remember, one problem in diabetes is blood flow and premature atherosclerosis.  That's why blood pressure control and meds for cholesterol are important.  Infection prevention is also key, especially keeping a close eye on the feet.  Coconut oil does not improve blood flow or prevent infection to my knowledge, but doesn't make either worse either. Gd luck.

Yes, but...: Coconut water is a very healthy drink, high in potassium(K), and other minerals with very little sugar and low glycemic index of 3!  It is essentially a low sugar sports drink. Be careful and make sure you are drinking pure coconut water without additives, particularly sweeteners. Many companies will add sugar for flavoring, check the label! If you have kidney disease, the K/mag may be an issue.

Not necessarily: Management of prediabetes &amp; prevention of progression is be judicious about carb intake. Consider seeing dietician &amp; learn how to read food label accurately to help you. Lose weight, stay active, &amp; control other factors such as cholesterol &amp; blood pressure. If the coconut milk has low carb content, it can be part of your diet. Try to check your sugar 2 hr after drinking to see its effect on you.

Shrimp: Probably not. At a bar what else did you drink or eat?. How was the coconut shrimp prepared? Have you eaten coconuts safely before. I you are concerned, talk to your doctor. Have an allergy test for both. He might ask you to bring a few shrimps to his office and make sure with you.

Need evaluation: You need to see a board certified allergist as soon as possible for further evaluation.  Some simple tests can be done in the office to help determine if you are allergic to coconut or shrimp or both.  In the meantime do not eat either.

Saturated fat: Coconut fat is saturated, as it is solid at room temperature.  Being a vegetable source, it does not have cholesterol, but intake of saturated fats causes alterations in metabolism and increase in blood cholesterol.

Coconut oil: Yes, it has healthy fats (medium chain fatty acids) which the body can use immediately for energy and is an overall very healthy oil to consume (the other being olive).  You can cook with it as well.
