Not your eyes: There may be an explanation but it does not in any way mean anything is wrong with your eyes.  Talk to your pcp.

laid down to sleep. when i closed my eyes i saw flashing white light. like a strobe light. only when i close my eyes. cause for concern?

Accepted Answer

No: If it happened once; no reason for any concern.
 If happens repeatedly and associated with headache/dizziness or vertigo some times then you should see your doctor for possibility of migrain.

Retinal: images...including bright lights etc can persist even with open eyes in the dark!

This is probably normal but if you have any other visual symptoms get your eyes checked by an OPTHAMOLOGIST (M.D.)

Light flashes: Your description is worrisome for a retinal problem (such as a retinal tear, break, or detachment).  Similar issues can be seen in other disorders (such as migraine headaches, optic nerve pathology, etc) but i would recommend seeing an eye doctor as soon as possible.

Yes: The eye flashes occur because the gel on instead of eye tugs on the retina. This will occur with your eyelids open or shut.

Flashing lights: Flashing lights in the eyes with the lights out cound be a sign of retinal issues (tears, breaks, or detachment), migraine headache related, or other issues.  You need to see an eye doctor as soon as possible for an evaluation.

Accepted Answer

Normal: The eye and brain do not like to have a pattern of incoming information interrupted.  When you close your eyes, the signal diminishes substantially and your normally active eye and brain send internal patterns and signals to compensate.  Don't worry about this and enjoy the show.

Flashing lights: in visual field indicates a need for you to see your opthalmogist (eye doc) ASAP.  It MAY be a retina that is detaching or it may be more minor.  Either way be safe.  Peace and good health.

i woke up from sleep  in middle of dark seeing flashes in my left eye. i continued to see them even with eyes closed. they disappeared after 10 minutes or so. is this a dangerous condition? thank you very much

Ophthalmologist: These flashes may be minor vitreous detachment, but to rule out more of a retinal problem and for peace of mind,and especially if you developed a flurry of floaters in your vision, I recommend an examination by an ophthalmologist. Occasionally flashes of light in both eyes can be a harmless  migraine equivalent without headache.
