Larger dose: Try a non-sedating antihistamine up to 4 x daily ( yes much larger than what is used for hay fever).  If this does not help. you may add a H2 antagonist such as Pepcid (famotidine) or ranitidine twice daily.  If this happens only at home or at school, then there is something in that environment causing the hives. Consult an allergist if the above measures didn't help.

when ever i'm not taken an antihistamine like clariten or zyrtec (cetirizine) and i am walking fast like to class i get extremely itchy like in my thigh region ?

Itchy: You might have dermatographism which is a physical urticaria from rubbing the skin. Rubbing, pressure or scratching your skin can cause a hive or wheal to develop which can be intensely itchy   Your doctor can test you for this if you are not taking antihistamines at the time you are examined. Antihistamines are an effective treatment of this condition

i gave expired antihistamine syrup to my 30 months old son incidentally...is it dangerous?what s the side effect on him?

Expired drugs: There should be no side effects as expiration is usually based on loss of drug effectiveness.  Drug companies err on the side of shortening times to expiration.  Actually many drugs are effective long after expiration dates.  Expired drugs are commonly used effectively by volunteer organizations when no other drugs are available.  Relax!

Steroid Nasal Spray: Flixonase or Flonase (fluticasone proprionate) is a steroid nasal spray commonly used to treat allergic rhinitis by decreasing the allergic inflammation in the nasal mucosa.  It is not an antihistamine.

Accepted Answer

Yes, but avoid: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) cream is available.  While some people find temporary relief for insect bites with this, in general it is not very effective compared to other antihistamines taken as pills or tabs.  For generalized rash, it really doesn't make sense.

Accepted Answer

Older ones do: First generation antihistamines (benadryl, clor-pheramine, atarax) cross the blood brain barrier and cause lethargy.  
Second generation (allegra, claritin, zyrtec, xyzal, (levocetirizine) clarinex) cause the blood brain barrier at a much lesser amount and more targeted to the h1 receptor.

Not a good idea: Antihistamines (especially the older ones such as benadryl) can cause drowsiness and impairment and this can be worsened by the effect of alcohol even at regular doses.  There are other allergy medications available that can be taken if a glass of wine is desired.

Accepted Answer

With what?: If you are thinking about drinking alcohol, do not do it. Antihistamines might potentiate the effect of alcohol.

Accepted Answer

Yes: There is a medication called tussionex that combines an older antihistamine (chlorpheniramine) with hydrodocone (similar to codeine).   This medication is especially effective for severe irritant cough.   It is important to carefully follow dosing directions.

IC: I commonly use anti histamine  for my IC patients.  Exciting histamine receptors in the bladder can stimulate inflammation. Similar responses are seen in sinus and stomach.   The antihistamine therefore blocks one possible arm of the inflammatory cycle.
