Claritin (loratadine) vs Hismanal: Astemizole  (hismanal) was a popular, non sedating, once a day antihistamine for allergy symptoms like runny, itchy nose, itchy eyes, sneezing etc. In some people, however it caused abnormal heart rhythm . So it was taken off the market. Seldane was another antihistamine with similar side effect.  Claritin, (loratadine) Allegra and zyrtec  are relatively safe.

Depends: Astemizole is not available in the U.S.

The other two are now over the counter medications for seasonal allergies.

Claritin (loratadine) ok: the major interactions with Stelara (ustekinumab) (mAb against IL-12 and IL-23) include decreased vaccine efficacy and concern for immune suppression when added to other suppressive drugs. Use of Claritin is ok.

Loratidine : Loratadine, commonly used to treat allergies, can have side effects including drowsiness, fatigue, abdominal pain, HAs, diarrhea, dry mucous membranes, as well as other side effects. The best option is to let your physician review your current history &amp; response to this med w/ you, and you and s/ he will decide which is the best  option for you now :)

will claritin (loratadine) protect against drug allergies for a full 24hrs? is it safe to use it if i've had hives from other, unrelated antihistamine pills?

Safe but...: It may last that long but may not be potent enough to control your hives.  You may need to up the dose to 4x daily.  It is unusual however to develop hives from taking any kind of antihistamine and thus i would suggest that you consult an allergist to sort this out.

Antihistamine  dry up mucus which  make getting rid of it difficult   But if  is there is lots of nasal congestion &amp; post nasal drip interfering with sleep it may be helpful . Also elevate head of bed to help with drainage and improve breathing. If there is HTN check for pseudoehprine/ phenylepherine which elevate BP f/u/doc

are there any non-sedative antihistamines that work like doxylamine? it is the only drug that helps my allergies. claritin/lortadine do not help.

Other choices: There are several other antihistamines that are options.   These include Cetirizine (zyrtec),  levo-cetirizine (xyzal) fexofenadine (allergra), and des-loratadine (clarinex).  It's not clear why some antihistamines seem to work better for some people than others, but these are worth a try.  Also, there is a nasal spray antihistamines including Astepro which works really well for some people.
