Could be: Strokes which affect the vertebro-basilar system and cause damage to the brainstem could affect respiratory rhythm rather profoundly, and if massive swelling were a consequence, eventual apneustic pattern could emerge requiring a respirator.  Of course, in absence of breathing support, death could ensue.

When conditions require more metabolic energy to be expended to compensate for the stress of the condition, the total expenditure for folks already committing lots of energy to breathing becomes higher and more difficult to achieve.

Speak with your doc: It sounds as if you have a sick family member in the hospital?  It is best to speak with the physicians at your loved ones hospital.  Some patients are able to breath normally after being on a ventilator.

If s/he says you're ok, then consider the recurrent nature of this and what you are doing or eating that is a trigger.  Food allergy and food intolerance symptoms come in all shapes and sizes.  Everyone's different.  Try a serious elimination diet, add some probiotics (long term) and let your body guide you to foods you can tolerate well. You may feel lots better.
