i cut a chunk out of my thumb and went to the er.  they put sergifoam in the evulsion and bandaged it up. my skin healed over it.  that bad?

Accepted Answer

No: A doctor will need to remove the material from your thumb. It is not a major procedure and may require some local anesthetic or not since it is right near the surface. The missing chunk of your thumb may actually fill back in after that. The important thing was to stop the bleeding with the foam.

my husband took a chunk out of his index finger with an electric saw. hospital doctor would not refer him to a surgeon for skin grafting. why not?

Skin defects may not: need skin grafting if defect is in a location that is prone to heal well.  Fingertips do not do as well with skin grafting as secondary healing if that is possible.  Secondary healing gives better sensation, contour and appearance BUT only if it is  type of wound where that is expected . Many told "may need to skin graft" at the initial encounter but often not needed . followup still important!!!

Protect: Avoid things that make you break out, soaps & wetness. Wash your hands only when necessary. Wear gloves when needed. Wear clothes made of cotton. Bathe only with a small amount of mild unscented soap, such as dove. Keep the water temperature cool or warm, not hot! use the medicine your doctor gave you. Use a plain moisturizer daily. Avoid scratching or rubbing the itchy area. Manage stress.

while shaving my underarms my hand slipped so i cut a small nick in my areola, a little piece of skin was hanging off. how should i care for the cut since it's in a sensitive area?

Keep clean &amp; cover: Wash the areola with a antibacterial soap twice daily  such as betadine and cover with a bandage.

Simple Treatment: The real question is what not to do that slows down healing. Avoid using alcohol, peroxide, hibiclens, betadine, and bleach solutions. Inflammation ( red, hot, swollen, tender) is important to healing  so anti-inflammatories (motrin, advil) are bad. Cover the area with a clean dressing changed every other day  and protected from trauma.  Antibiotics do not help healing unless it is truly infected.

Probably: Use topical antibiotic keep covered and if it doses not become red and develop any swelling you are ok. If it worsens see doctor for antibiotic.

Cuts/post care instr: First you should call the people who treated you for specific instructions for aftercare. In the meantime keep it dry, clean, watch for sign of infection such as swelleing, redness, pain or discharge. Dont forget call your care giver

No risk, no worry: Nobody ever caught HIV this way. If the person you hit had HIV, AND had a fresh bleeding wound, AND if your wound was brand new, still bleeding, and struck his wound, there might be some risk. But none of this happened and there is no risk at all. To prevent HIV, don't have unrproected sex with new partners and don't share drug needles with other people. Otherwise no worries!

Finger wound: A slice of skin off the finger tip can lead to bleeding that persists for quite a time, and may start back up again when you change the dressing. Taking asprin or Ibuprofen (motrin, advil) can make bleeding worse. If the piece of skin cut off is available at the time of the injury, cleaning it with water and reapplying it to the wound can make the best dressing (and it may even grow back).

i'm a wildland firefighter. i cut a chunk of the tip of my thumb off.  it was cauterized.  whats the quickest i can be back out there. any healing tip?

Let it heal: Follow the wound care instructions given to you by the treating physician. Protect the wound from further trauma. Sorry this means no axe or shovel work until you have new tissue covering the wound. Re-injury or infection only prolong the process and keep you off the line longer.
