Numbness /pins needl: Vascular pain generally pale, cold,  open sores, poor wound healing. After a certain number of steps foot goes numb then after a short rest numbness disappears (Claudication)
Neuropathic pain generally pins &amp; needles never eases up, worsens at night ,foot feels heavy and pain is gnawing. rest  minimally improves pain.
Pain could be a combination of both vasc &amp; Neuro

For instance, if your chronic pain is from a bulging disk and you have that repaired, odds are pretty good that your chronic pain is "cured" or significantly relieved.  There r advances being made all the time in the treatment of chronic pain to help the pain w/o just knocking people out with narcotics. Try to fix the problem not just treat symptoms.

What is measureable and worthy of testing are the conditions that might precipitate chronic pain.  Findings on x-ray, ct, mri, blood work and by clinical examination are sufficient to make a pathological diagnosis, but whether these findings result in chronic pain depends on the person.
