Depends: The results you get from a vitamin depends upon many things. One, it would depend on your body's need for the vitamin - if you do not need it , it will not make a difference.  It also depends upon the the quality of the vitamin- some are good and some are no good at all. Next, it would depend on your body's ability to absorb and use the vitamin.  It can take months to notice a difference.

None: If he eats healthy food like veggies, fruits, beans, nuts, seats, whole grains, unsweetened almond milk and wild fish like salmon, he'll get all the vitamins he needs. 15 minutes of sun a day would also be good.

Food not pills: Several studies came out last year showing no health benefits from taking vitamins. I would recommend getting a balance of fruits and vegetables. They contain more vitamins and antioxidants than you could ever get from a pill. Spend your money of fresh foods not pills.

Yes: I advise everyone to take a good multivitamin. Very few Americans get the recommended allowance of all vitamins and minerals and even those who do benefit from taking higher amounts. I also advise at least 500 mg of Vit C 2x/day. All Americans (except those in the deep South) need 5000-8000 iu of Vit D3 in fall and winter months, year-round if don't get much sun. See

Maybe: I advise my patients on vitamins by using this analogy:  vitamins are like your car insurance; you hope you never need to use it but it's nice to have when you do need it. If one always eats a variety of foods, 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day, low saturated fats and high fiber, then one probably does not need vitamins. That being said, i recommend one multivitamin daily.
