i have endometriosis. i also have a "chocolate cyst" on my ovary. it is causing me pain and is also bulging through my skin. cause for concern?

Endometriosis: Hello,
You should have this evaluated as you may require surgery to address these findings.  As Endometriosis progresses/grows it can affect your bowels and urination.  For many women, there is also significant pain associated with Endometriosis and possible infertility depending on the extent of the Endometriosis.

See your Gyn: Cikan, something is going on.  It may or may not have anything to do with the prior ovary/cyst problem, but you are not supposed to have spotting after menopause.  So please see your gynecologist as soon as you can and get an examination and an explanation or more testing.  Good luck!

NOT GOOD: Your doc should have told u that you will need a laparoscopy or robotic surgery as you most likely have endometriosis and after the suregery then u will know your chances which still may not be good as your tubes may be in bad shape also , you may need in vitro to get preg.

Endometriosis: Surgery is the only way to get rid of it.  Hormonal suppression (like birth control pills or lupron) can help decrease recurrence.

Not cancer: Endometriosis is a common problem in women when benign endometrial tissue can be found elsewhere.  It can cause bleeding, pain, scarring, etc.  When endometriosis forms a cystic mass (such as in the ovary) it is referred to as an endometrioma.  A chocolate cyst is just a synonym that sounds "less medical" and refers to the (perhaps) "chocolatey" appearance of the cyst contents.

See your doctor: A chocolate cyst is associated with endometriosis.  This can be surgically removed and other endometrial implants removed or destroyed.  If your pain is severe you may need to go to the emergency room for evaluation.  If symptoms are more moderate see your doctor as soon as possible.

No: It will not go away with medication. The cause of the cyst is endometrial glands on the ovary which need to be removed. With the size of the cyst it can rupture and cause and emergency situation. Best to treat with surgery in a timely manner.

Most likely: Having stage IV endometriosis reduces the chances of conception. There are techniques such as superovulation with intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization that will improve your chances greatly. You still have a possibility of conceiving.
