When able to sit up: Walkers and jumpers do not help a baby learn to walk. Walkers and jumpers are ok to use under adult supervision, and for less than 30-60 minutes at one time. They are not for keeping a toddler in, without supervision. Dangers include crashing into furniture corners, flipping over, falling down stairs, and sliding through the seat (possibly getting tangled up and possibly getting choked).

Need medical care!: Whether or not you have a VP shunt,  localized or atypical headache should NOT be ignored.  Particularly since it's worse when you cough, it could be a sign of increased intracranial pressure.  Please see your neurologist or neurosurgeon right away.

Exploration, itch: Some kids do stuff the first time to explore how it feels, or get attention. Some because they feel an itch & think putting something there will change it. Most don't talk yet so they seldom tell us why, but it will happen in most. I encourage parents not to use q-tips on young kids or they might decide to put something in their ear like mommy does.

Lymph node swelling: Our immune system includes a number of way stations where immune cells (lymphocytes and others) congregate and fight infection.  These are called lymph nodes.  The ones located behind the ears ("posterior auricular") can enlarge during a viral infection, or from inflammation involving the outer ear or scalp, as in swimmer's ear or seborrhea of the scalp.  Malignancy would be a rare cause.

why would a child need a permanent tube placed in ears?

Long term problem: If the child has shown that his/her middle ear fluid (eustachian tube dysfunction) will not resolve after they have already had 2 or more sets of regular tubes then they may be a candidate for permanent tubes. This is especially true if other treatments have been tried such as medications for allergies. Presumably the child has severe eustachian tube dysfunction due to his anatomy.

Yes, but...: We need to clarify:  is the external ear red?  Or are you referring to when a physician looks at the middle ear with an otoscope?  Redness is usually a sign of inflammation but can be present for many reasons.  A red external ear can be inflammed from sunburn, vasodilation due to exertion (when your child runs around or cries).  A red eardrum can be infection, viral or bacterial.
