Ankle ulcer: Sickle cell ulcers most often occur on the inside of the ankle, or just above the ankle. There are similarities in appearance to venous stasis ulcers and venous insufficiency was even suspected in sickle cell patients. Venous insufficiency was found not to be  causing ulcers in sickle cell patients.

Stand, &amp; hold hands.: It may be painful for her to walk. If not, try getting her to pull to stand. If she can pull up to stand, then she isn't too weak or in too much pain, just hasn't decided to walk yet. There is a range of normal ages for developmental milestones. If she were two, I would be very concerned. If she can pull up to standing by herself, she will probably try walking soon.

Pain: with sickle cell disease is very common. I have known some patients that complained of having neurological type pain in their legs and feet.  Let your provider know and do a thorough exam for proper diagnosis and treatment.  Feel better!

Need MRI: The MRI is the gold standard and should be done to rule the diagnosis in or out. Why wasn't it done?

Yes: In order to have sickle cell anemia, a child must have inherited 2 abnormal genes for hemoglobin (the part if the red blood cell that carries oxygen), one from each parent.  There are many genetic types of "sickle cell disease", but usually at least one true sickle gene is involved.

Yes: The defect of sickle cell anemia occurs when 2 sickle cell genes are passed to a newborn. Since each parent passes half their genes at conception & it takes 2 sickle genes to cause disease, one gene comes from each parent. Many parents carry this gene quietly, unknown to them because it doesn't make a single gene carrier sick.
