had chest xray for cough, coughed foam, shoulder pain, enlarged supraclavicular node monday. no results yet. if abnormal would i get call by now (wed)?

Report requirements: As a US radiologist for 30 years I can speak to standard of care. If a radiologist sees a likely cancer or broken bone, etc. they must be certain the ordering doc gets a timely, usu. in 24 hr. report. The ordering doc is then duty bound to notify their patient. On the other hand these days patients are expected to be proactive and badger their ordering doctors until they get  an answer.

i had a chest xray today for a cough. results say mild lower thoracic scoliosis convexity to the right. should i be concerned? also, mild bronchitis.

Accepted Answer

No: Scoliosis curves in the thoracic spine that are less than 45 degrees will not typically progress or cause any problems.  The descriptive "mild" scoliosis indicates a curve much less than that.  No worries.

Maybe: The chest x-ray is performed to determine if your symptoms may be due to pneumonia, heart failure, of fluid accumulating in the space around the lung (pleural space).
 A patient with common cold will usually have a normal chest x-ray.
 A cough can be a symptom associated with the above mentioned problems.

No: Most coughs do not require a chest x-ray. Your doctor may opt to obtain an x-ray if you have a persistent cough over a long period of time that is not improving despite appropriate care or medication.

CXR & cough: Most of the time nothing. We want to rule out a possible underlying lung disease process. When the chest x-ray is negative (benign), it helps narrow the differential diagnosis (the possibilities).

Not generally: Pulmonary involvement in sle is generally manifested as pleural effusions(fluid around the lung) and pneumonitis.  These would generally result in an abnormal chest x-ray.  Chronic cough in sle can be associated with esophageal reflux which is not uncommon and generally associated  with raynauds.

See a doctor: the most common causes of dry cough are bronchspasm, acid reflux, and post nasal drip.
in your case poorly selective beta blockers like metoprolol and atenolol may cause bronchospasm hence the cough.

if you need a beta blocker "bystolic" would be a better choice, however a work up with lung function testing, and an exam of the posterior pharynx and vocal cords and possibly allergy testing.

4 weeks: long time. Get checked for asthma and GERD. I would suggest allergy testing, pulmonary function testing and a CT of your chest. Call for a repeat exam.

hi when i lay on my left side i start to cough mucus and i have a stinging burning feeling when i've coughed.chest x-ray clear too??

Possible acid reflux: This sounds like an episode of acid reflux causing coughing.  The most common cause of chronic cough can be due to asthma, Post nasal dripping (feels like fluid running behind your throat), or acid reflux. For reflux you could try to not eat a couple hours before bedtime (1-2 hours), try sleeping with slight incline (use a couple of pillows) or you could use some over the counter anti acid tablets

my breathing is odd, wheezing and cough that won't shift. had for 5 weeks now. had a chest x-ray but was told no further action needed.

Cough : You will need to confirm whether or not you have asthma or not. Xray negative so other tests will need to be done to. Find the cause. Acid Reflux is a possibility as well.  Follow up with the doctor for further tests and treatment. Hope this helps
