Broken rib: Sounds like you have a broken rib. They might have missed the fracture on the cxr, either because of human error, or because the x ray did not pick it up. A ct of the chest can give you a definitive answer.

Maybe fracture: Rib.  Chest wall xray, may not have been rib xrays, which are better at picking up fractures.  May ask your doctor to order rib series. Sprain/strain/bruising of intercoastal muscles from seat-belt, or interior of car likely cause.

Heat, physical therapy, acupuncture and pain relieving drugs are the usual course of therapy.  Many forms are self-limited and if persistent, further evaluation is indicated.

If they are, then s/he'll check your ribs, to make sure that your ribs aren't inflamed. If you notice it more upon breathing in or only when exhaling out, it's pointing to ribs or musculoskeletal issues. Get it checked out soon.
