Maybe pericardial: Pain which is altered by breathing may be due to irritation in the tissue surrounding the heart- the pericardium. Other cause could be the lung tissue itself.

CT - when?: It's reassuring to know that your CT was normal but was it done for this illness (recently?). Your symptoms can be due to muscular pain, pleurisy or pericarditis. If you have fever, you need repeat chest x-ray, blood count and echo. Otherwise, I'd try an analgesic - ibuprofen or naprosyn (naproxen).

Depends: If it's every single time you exhale, you really should have that checked.  If it's only on occasion, it can be an indicator of pleuritic type chest pain.  In any case you should be checked by your doctor.

Muscular: With a negative CT scan, I think we can be assured that your pain is muscular or in the costochondral joints which attach your ribs to your sternum (and would not show up on CT). When you breathe, you're using intercostal muscles and flexing these joints. If you search diligently, you may be able to find trigger points by compressing different areas when they hurt. Ibuprofen and naproxen may help.

Evaluate: Please see you physician. Asthma is one possible cause, and if there is shortness of breath, please see a physician right away.

No: Most likely the pain is coming from the chest wall due to muscle strain. If muscular maneuvers reproduce the pain, such as twisting or stretching the rib cage by bending from side to side, it further suggests chest wall pain. You may also find a tender area in the chest.
