This is a Complex Qu: This is a complex issue. Yes, TB can and often does cause fibrosis/nodular changes which typically regress partially or complete once a full course of treatment has been taken.. There is of course risk of recurrence of TB. So we have to find out if your lung changes are left over of the older TB or are these new changes(progression). For this you need to go back to the doctor who treated your TB.

Old injury?: A scar on the lung is like one elsewhere on the body. It may be the result of an old infection or pneumonia, for example.  In the lung they need to be watched .  They usually stay the same.

why is there more scar tissue on a chest x ray?

Accepted Answer

If you mean compared: To a prior chest xray, it could be due to infections or other lung diseases during the interval between the x-rays, leading to some scarring.

Alternatively, the radiologist that read this xray may have been more impressed with some areas of scarring and mentioned it in the report, but it was there before, and not new.

Maybe not: In chest x-rays of older adults, we can see tuberculosis scarring from decades ago if they had lung TB infections. If the lung inflammation is minor and barely visible on x-ray, maybe it won't be visible decades from now, but nobody can predict the future. In such cases, a patient should keep copies of his x-rays and make a record of his test results and treatments, to inform his future doctors.

Yes: Pleurisy is caused by inflammation of the linings around the lungs (the pleura), a condition also known as pleuritis. It's possible to have developed scarring. It's also possible that there's a little bit of leftover damage still healing itself. It's widespread inflammation, takes some time to heal, and that could cause chronic chest pain or discomfort.

May not be scar: Could be a tiny area of collapsed lung, called atelectasis, which is very common and benign.

Also, technology keeps getting better, so the chest xrays are more detailed, especially digital radiography.

Also, the scar may have been developing all along, and just became big/dense enough to see.

Lastly, make sure your doctor is not concerned about the results - if they are, consider workup with ct.

No: The bony structures involved in scoliosis do not put a scar into the lungs on a chest x-ray. They are physically separate locations. The rib cage that surrounds the lungs can have an altered appearance, and shift things around some, but the lung tissue inside is seen as a separate space.

what could be an opaque white spot in the armpit on a chest x-ray? im 37 now but had a pus filled lymph node drained with a huge needle when i was 12, it left a scar on the outside, could the white spot be because of that?

It could: That’s why imaging has to be compared with previous films as it may pick unchanged lesions from before that will appear as new or abnormal for the radiologist. The only way to tell for sure would be by comparison and your primary care doc palpating the lesion for changes in size.
