muscle spasms: The most common reason for this complaint is muscle spasms of the intercostal muscles between the ribs, which is most frequently due to nerve irritation.  This is best treated with anti-inflammatories such as Naproxen to decrease the inflammation of both the nerve and the muscle.

Spasm or cramp: Similar to muscle spasms in the back or elsewhere in the body--over use or over stretching can cause local injury to the muscle tissue and spasm. Often improves with gentle massage and/or local warm compresses to relax the muscle band.

Musculoskeletal : Most likely the chest wall or rib cage pain is musculoskeletal. Local heat and Ibuprofen may help to relieve your symptoms.

This could either be on top of the chest wall in the muscle or what we call costrochonditis or to be within the lung and be pleurisy, in the lung  tissue, or other structures there. This is not a simple evaluation, need to have the guidance of your physician

Stretch, magnesium: Stretching would always be good prior to physical activity. Yoga would be good in general. Check side effects of any medication you are on.A lot of people are low in magnesium. Try taking 400-800 mg daily. Next is adequate hydration, hydration etc. A liquid trace mineral supplement would also be a good add-on.

Strained muscle: It's probably a strained muscle which is in spasm. I recommend stretching and icing (if needed).
