what's causes change in stool caliber? pencil thin stools different shapes and sizes always? did a colonoscopy and ends and capsule 4 months ago polyp non cancerous biopsies taken? should i be scared? been like this for years but lately really bad

Less worries please: Stool texture (regardless of volume or frequency of movements) , shape, &amp; caliber are affected by multiple factors (fiber intake, bacterial load, GI transit, fluid secretion, etc.)  Sounds however like your evaluation has been at least reassuring to-date.

Oh my...: Before you contemplate long term laxative use, seek medical evaluation--rule out metabolic causes of constipation (e.g. Low thyroid or adrenal conditions), distinguish slow versus normal transit constipation, consider a primary rectal dysfunction that may be treatable with biofeedback, check for structural pathology or extrinsic impingement, or intermittent ileus (e.g. Pseudo-obstruction).

hello, i'm 19 years old, have had very occasional red blood in stool since last summer. now some change in stool caliber. parents say not to worry?

Sounds like you are : Constipated . Occasional blood in the stools are normal if you suffer from constipation.Change in caliber might be more concerning . You need to discuss this with your physician to be sure it is just constipation and not colon cancer or other medical conditions causing blood and change in stool caliber . Erring on the safe side. Please get checked.

Yes: however other conditions can cause your symptoms too.  Lactose intolerance can develop in later years, as can some infectious diseases.  Spastic colon is often a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning you need to rule out other causes before coming to your diagnosis.  It's always a good idea to get an exam and confirm the diagnosis with your physician.

Obstruction: You may have had a diagnosis of diverticulitis at 22 but if you have had recurrent attacks, you may now have developped an obstruction from narrowing that occurs with healing. This is likely benign and if ibd, not uc but crohns dz. No matter what, this needs to be evaluated and i would recommend quickly. Any GI or colorectal could see this.

: If you do not drink enough fluids during your respiratory illness it could result in hard stools/constipation.  To stay well hydrated drink enough water daily so that your urine is mostly colorless.

Mushy,smelly,color : In my experience,smelly stools don't provide any diagnostic help. However, high fat foods can make stools yellowish, soft and foul smelling. White,clay colored stool may be a sign of failure of liver to release bile salts into fecal matter in the intestines or bile blockage.Black stool is a sign of upper gi tract bleeding. Green stool means feces moving too fast through the gi tract to turn Brown.

Diets effect stools: Diets such as those high in lactose, alcohol, rich and spicy foods, coffee &amp; magnesium can cause loose stools. Diets such as those low in water and fiber can cause constipation. If such changes happen rarely it's probably not cause for concern. Try to eat a balanced diet with adequate fruit &amp; veggies &amp; water. Regular exercise is also advisable. And make certain you have regular medical check-ups!

Need to see a doctor: Soft stools which are dark (assuming by dark you mean more on the black side than brown), can be sue to bleeding in the upper intestinal track (stomach).  Change in diet and other conditions can do this. Be sure to see your doctor.
