Absolutely: While not all mris are of the same quality, in general they are used to determine if there is a pinched or compressed nerve or spinal cord in the cervical spine. Constrast is used only in special circumstances.

Unlikely cancer: Hemangioma may have characteristic MRI appearance even without contrasr.

Depends on problem: Much can be learned from MRI without contrast but if a vascular anomaly or tumor is suspected the IV dye helps to  show the extent of the lesion and it's location in areas that are not well delineated without the dye. If your doctor recommended it, you should go ahead and have the dye injected. Avoid it if you are allergic to the dye.

Vascular surgeon: If you're concerned about this finding I recommend having a vascular surgeon evaluate you and the images collaborating with the radiologist who interpreted the MRI. In this way you will be reassured if the finding is only a normal variant with no clinical or pathological significance.

Typically a fusion : takes 12 weeks to fuse at 2 levels but up to 6 months as long as you are not a smoker or hypothyroid which can impair bone fusions.  A MRI is not a very good way to assess a fusion, a CT is optimal with 2 mm. Axial cuts for coronal and sagittal reconstructions .

Neurosurgery: Consult a neurologist or neurosurgeon.  They may want an MRI with and without contrast to more decisively show it's a hemangioma.

Maybe: Mri's are very focused exams. To get the best quality imaging of the area of interest, the field of view is limited as much as possible. The trachea may have been included, but not necessarily. You should speak with your doctor or the radiologist that read the study and ask them to look at the trachea. If it is seen, they can answer your question and if not they can recommend another test.

Pluses and minuses: A ct myleogram gives great bony detail but is invasive, contrast placed in thecal sac MRI will give equivalent information without risk of intrathecal contrast and additional information about the state of spinal cord increased signal intensity within the cord   bad sign.

i am having a cervical mri with contrast (gadolinium) on monday, may 13 at 3:30pm. is it safe for me to take 60 mgs. of prednisone and lomotil approximately 5-6 hours before i have this mri with contrast? thank you very much.

MRI Time: The actual procedure for the MRI could take up to approx 45 minutes for each level.  A ct scan takes less time but does expose you to radiation. The MRI does not expose you to radiation.
