i wanted to know is cerebral spinal fluid life threatening?

Not sure what ? Is: CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) is made continuously by brain. CSF is made on top of the brain and drains down to spinal canal.   Hydrocephalus occurs if there is a blockage with the ventricles (fluid filled spaces) in brain becoming larger.  Often surgery is needed to treat this condition which occurs in premies who have bleed into their brains or in elderly with NPH (Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus).

Consistent with...: ...Meningitis; glucose in CSF should be at or above 2/3 of blood glucose, and 90% lymphocytes differential is suggestive of, but not diagnostic for, viral meningitis. Until cultures come back (2-3 days) must be treated as bacterial.

Not the best test: CSF examination may contain malignant cells in the presence of metastatic cancer, but normal CSF does not rule out metastases to the brain. Imaging studies are more likely to be helpful.

had two spinal taps cont2.. csf was lyme negative... symptoms still persist 2+ years. brain mri white matter foci.. blood test results now normalizing?

Infection occurred: Two years ago, and you are recovering; labs correct faster than clinical symptoms, if they ever will.

A couple things...: This could mean that you were significantly dehydrated at the time or possibly the person doing the LP may not have had a good angle to provide good CSF flow from the needle.

how dangerous is a spinal tap for csf fluid? does the spine miss it?

Accepted Answer

Not dangerous: The most frequent problem might be a post-spinal tap headache when up and about, which can easily be reversed.  The missing fluid is typically replenished with a half hour, and usually the puncture closes rapidly.  Otherwise, complications a few and far between.  It is a very safe process these days.

Once leak is gone: It only takes a few hours.
