Hip surgery: The location of the incision depends on the approach to hip used. The common appraoches are anterior, posterior & lateral. The incion for routine hip arhroplasty is about 12-14 cm.

how long does recovery take for a total hip arthroplasty?

3 months: Recovery is dependent on your overall level of general fitness, but typically you will progress at a rate of 8% to10% improvement per week, with complete recovery within 10 to 12 weeks.  At 4 to 5 weeks you should be 50% better and moving from a walker to a cane.  At 6 weeks you should be getting off the cane.  At 2 months you should be 80% to 90% better.

Hip Rehab: The hip arthroplasty patient is expected to walk next day. In cemented hip one can put weight on it as tolerated. In press fit, noncemeted hip , patient is advised not to put weight on it for 6 weeks. One has to follow hip precautions  trough out life. ( not to cross legs, sit on low chair or commode or bend forward to full extent etc. ).

Yes: The patient stays in the hospital for 3 day.

Accepted Answer

Yes with limitations: Flexibility is important, but you should avoid certain postions in the immediate postoperative period because your hip may dislocate.  If it was a posterior approach, you should be avoid flexion and internal rotation.  If it was an anterior approach, you should avoid extension and external rotation.  You should check with your surgeon for his or her preferences.

how long does recovery after hip arthroplasty take? i need to have arthroplasty of my hip joint. apart from my hip joint,  i'm a healthy male in my mid fifties. on average, how long should i expect my recovery to take?

Hip replacement: 6 weeks on average for collagen to heal--give yourself at least 12 weeks total to retrain the mscles for movement and gait.Consider direct anterior hip approach withich is muscle sparing. Check with your orthopedic surgeon.

is a hip hemi arthroplasty the same thing as a total hip replacement?

No: A hemi hip arthroplasty is a partial replacement where only the ball part is replaced with an artificial ball that is attached with a stem into the femur.  The cup side of the hip joint is not replaced.  In a total hip replacement an artificial acetabular cup is placed and secured into the socket and a ball is placed into the femur.

Balance: It may take some time (several months to a year) for other lower extremity joints and the spine to adjust to the increased mobility of your new hip. This will be particularly the case if there was a significant leg length difference which was corrected by surgery.

is it ok to have 2 surgeries close together? i am having cmc arthroplasty on mar 10 and i need a hip tendon release. my choices for dates for that are 2/19 or 4/16. does it matter or should i choose the april appointment as it's a bit longer  between?

SHOULD BE FINE: You should be fine to proceed as those procedures are seperate and anatomically distinct.  The one concern I would have is if you will require use of a crutch after your hip surgery you may need a modified crutch for use on the arm that has the cmc arthroplasty.

Accepted Answer

Many factors: Contributors to outcomes following joint replacement include patient and surgeon factors.  While a technically well performed replacement will help the eventual outcome, the patient controls most of the factors; such as preoperative fitness, range of motion, and postoperative drive to rehabilitate.
