Q: is it possible for me to take cefuroxime axetil if i am allergic to penicillan?

Probably yes, but: Cefuroxime has very little similarity with penicillin. Still, some patients who are highly sensitive to penicillin don't tolerate it. If you had a life-threatening reaction to penicillin, don't take it without consulting an allergist/immunologist first. If yo had a mild rash or nausea, you can probably try it.

i am allergic to ceftin, cipro, macrobid, sulfa, penicillin, floxin and biaxin.  my doctor says i have an uti but she can't prescribe anything because of my allergies.  she says drink lots of water.    isn't there some antibiotic i can take?

Of course: The urine can be cultured to see what bacteria is in there, and which antibiotics can be used. If needed, an allergist can check for true allergies to antibiotics, and help select the safest one to use. If UTI symptoms are slight and they go away without antibiotics, that's ok... as long as a patient does close follow-up to check for recurrences or other bladder, kidney, vulvo-vaginal issues.

Nope: Severe tingling has not been described as a side effect of Ceftin (cefuroxime).

Probably: There's about a 15% chance that you'll be allergic to ceftin (cefuroxime).  If your penicillin allergy was life-threatening, you shouldn't take the risk, but if you just developed a rash, it's fine to try the ceftin (cefuroxime).

: Most people who are truly allergic with PCN can take cephalosporins, especially you took Ceftin without problem in the past. Yes, you can take Cefdinir.

Clindamycin: There are other antibiotics to use, such as clindamycin, for group a streptococcus throat infections. I am concerned about how many antibiotics you are already allergic to. Given your young age it might be worth seeing an infectious diseases specialist and/or allergist to determine what antibiotic options you have before the time you really need them.

Maybe: You have about a 2-5% chance to also be allergic to cefuroxime.  You may want to talk to your allergist about testing to penicillin first to confirm this allergy.  If you do have pcn allergy, then you can: 1.Use a different antibiotic 2. Do a graded challenge/desensitization to cefuroxime.  If negative to pcn on testing, <1% will have problems with cefuroxime.
