i have really bad taste in my mouth following dental work two days ago. had a cavity under a crown. now have temporary crown. ?

Bacteria/Debris: The bad taste could be from the temporary crown (acrylic), food trapping, remaining decay, or an infected tooth.  Any pain?

Varies: Varies from patient to patient, even tooth to tooth. If the pain is subsiding over a few days you should be fine. If the pain is the same and intensifying, then root canal therapy is indicated before the final restoration is placed. This happens when the carious lesion is deep... the nerve inside the tooth gets traumatized.

Eventually, yes: If the carious lesion is that deep, then the tooth may require root canal therapy first. Better to treat the problem before the crown is placed.

That depends: That depends on the size of the cavity. Crowns are a very effective way to treat large cavities where a lot of the tooth is missing because they cover over and protect the remaining natural tooth structure. Small to medium sized cavities do not require crowns.

HMMM: Not sure i understand the question however if the crown fits well and you brush and floss it can be there for decades. A crown protects a weakened tooth but does not make it impervious to decay.

No you don't: Crowns should completely seal any areas of the tooth have been removed prior to crown placement. The edges of the crown should be smooth and flush with the tooth surface at the margins. Once a crown is placed, it is not likely to get a cavity where it seals the tooth. 
There will be parts of the tooth that the crown doesn't cover. Those can decay, just like any tooth surface - not related to crown

It is possible: A little more history about the onset and type of pain you are experiencing is necessary. If the crown has been in place for a long period of time, you could have recurrent decay in the tooth.  You could also have a periodontal or gum problem.  If the crown is a new crown, it could be related to irritation from the seating of the crown, possibly some residual cement , or your occlusion or bite.

1-3 wks.: Drilling on a tooth can cause a hyperemia or increase in blood flow to the pulp. Clinically you will have sensitivity to cold. If this doesn't go away in a few wks. Or if it persists and if the tooth then becomes heat sensitive, you will probably need a root canal to solve the problem.

Both: The extent of the problem in each will determine which one is more important to do. Your own dentist can answer that question better than we can never having seen either tooth nor x-rays of them. If money is an issue consider at least having the crown removed to evaluate the tooth, and then temporized with a good fitting strong temporary crown.

It : It is extremely difficult to determine what specific restoration the tooth in question needs, sight unseen. One dentist might feel it can be restored with a filling, and the other may feel it needs a crown; both are entitled to their professional opinion as to how the tooth should be treated. What concerns me more is that you were told every restoration in your mouth is faulty and needs replacement. Although not impossible, it is highly unlikely, especially since another dentist deemed the restorations intact.
