Eating: Tonsil stones (i.e. Tonsilliths) are collections of food and debris which get trapped in the tonsils.  This material gets infected usually becomes foul smelling.  Some tonsils have more nooks and crannies in which to collect this debris, which makes the stones larger and/or more numerous.  If removed, tonsilliths usually will recur.  If severe, tonsillectomy will cure the problem. Best wishes.

Probably not, but..: There are crypts in the tonsil that can get filled with all kinds of debris and form "stones". They can easily be removed by your dentist. Tonsil stones: Hello, it depends on how you are dislodging the tonsilliths. I recommend a forceful gargle after every meal. This should be the most atraumatic way to remove these stones. If you manipulate the tonsil tissue with a tool of some type, then bleeding commonly occurs. Be careful because scar tissue could occur that will lead to a serious infection, maybe even an abscess. Normal: It may be normal to have some discharge or tonsillar exudate, that resides in crypts within the tonsils.  They can be related to retained food particles that are degraded by saliva and bacteria, which can cause the foul odor.

Tonsil stones: Tonsil stones are common.  The most frequent complaints from people with them are sore throat, scratchy throat, halitosis or bad breath and recurrent throat infections.  Although it is certainly possible to cause cough, your cough is probably not necessarily related.  Evaluation of a cough should include listening to the lungs with a stethoscope, chest x-ray, lung function tests and larynx exam.

: Probably cryptic tonsillitis: presents with bad breath, chronic sore throat, and expelling of foul-smelling cheesy lumps.  Offending organism is not usually strep germ.  I would recommend to see an ENT specialist for proper medical or surgical care.
