Many possibilities: Often associated with viral infections such as EBV disease it may also occur with non-infectious inflammatory conditions and with some hematologic malignancies.  You do not provide enough info to go further than that, but a good clinical diagnostician should be able to work this out with further testing. Good luck and best wishes.

recent annual lab work noted a few atypical lymphocytes. my doctor was not concerned at all since all cell counts were in normal range except platelets, which have been low since my youth. should i be concerned? what causes few atypical lymphocytes?

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, if you are not satisfied with the care your doctor is providing it is appropriate to see a different one.  A few atypical lymphocytes per se are not a cause for concern.

Possible: More history is needed to correctly diagnose the problem. Atypical lymphocytosis is typical in patients with mononucleosis, pertussis (whooping cough) that is epidemic in wa state now. You need a more comprehensive work up at this time.

Usually EBV: Epstein barr virus- also called mono- is one of the common causes of atypical lymphocytes.  They are also noted in other syndromes, including CMV infection, primary HIV infection, viral hepatitis, toxoplasmosis, rubella, mumps, and roseola, and in drug reactions.

Any symptoms: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, this my be your normal. If you do not have any symptoms you may watch and wait. If you get fever, enlarged lymph nodes, weight loss or bleeding, see your doctor.

Numbers are just...: Numbers are just numbers. Without the whole picture, such as why was lab tests were done, numbers usually cannot tell much. The result values in this question may  or may not be fine for a normal person with no symptoms, but one should still ask his ordering doctor if the result is ok in the setting of his whole picture.
