Gentle exposure: Taste is a combination of sensation of the taste buds on the tongue and the sensory cells in the nose.  Damage to these cells will damage taste.  Smoking and chronic abuse with strong foods and drink may produce permanent damage.  The frontal lobe of the brain and the nerves of the brainstem are necessary to process information to produce the sensation of taste.  Gentle recovery may still occur.

A bit atypical: For GERD to cause pain on inspiration.  It would be more common that you have irritation/injury of one of the intercostal muscles(muscle between the ribs that help you take deep breaths) or one of the joints of the chest wall(as in costochondritis).  It you are having this pain frequently and/or it's severe, see your doctor about this.

If it is  acid reflu: many tiggers can aggravate asthma.If asthma is the correct diagnosis and improved with acid reflux measures consider other triggers eg: allergy,infectious anatomic and psychologicl

GERD: I have chest pain caused by GERD that is sometimes severe. What can I do to relieve this pain? I have had an endoscopy and it showed no underlying p ANS: If no one has suggested it I recommend putting 6 inch blocks under the head of your bed. You can get them at Bed Bath and Beyond of DIY stores. This keeps acid from running into your esophagus which causes the pain. Works quickly and well.

Ha: Migraine are treatable but sometimes challenging to find the proper regimen. If we can reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms by 50% then we consider treatment sucessful. However the goal is always to do better.

does prilosec successfully prevent cancer caused by gerd?

Possibly: Prilosec (omeprazole) and other ppis have a better track record in preventing complications and sequela  of severe gerd (stricture/stenosis/ca) than less potent rx, like ranitidine (zantac) and other h2 blockers, sucralfate, antacids, "alternative" rx like mastic gum and deglyzirrhinated licorice  the latter are ok if there is no severe inflammation/erosions, barrett's changes, .

Response to therapy: Assuming that you have narrowed the cause of your cough down to these things, it all depends on your response to medical therapy and avoidance of triggers. Your doctor could help with a trial of an inhaler like albuterol and you could also try medicines that are available over the counter for GERD and allergies. If you respond to symptomatic care, that may be al that you need. Also consider URIs.

No: There is no evidence that herbal supplements can reverse barrett's metaplasia.

i've tried nexium for my gerd symptoms before, but it caused nausea and abdominal pain... that doesn't mean that my issues aren't caused by gerd, does it?

Not necessarily: It may be related to the side effects of Nexium and you still may have GERD or GERD like symptoms. Would suggest talking to your doc to see what your options are. Details matter so keep a log of your symptoms.

Splint: Rest, night splint, vitamin b6 100mg / day, over the counter anti-inflammatory meds and ergonomic changes to work space. If that fails then cortisone injection and surgery (endoscopic).
