When an effective treatment kills an abundance of cells, these are released and need to be purged with saline fluids to avoid excess potassium, uric acid, and othe by-products that could result in kidney failure.

Well-known: Phosphate (which binds and lowers calcium), uric acid, and potassium are released from dying cells.  During induction chemotherapy, usually leukemia / lymphoma, so many cancer cells may die off that these products can make a person sick.  Today's oncologists are very familiar with handling this. Yes there are: There are a few good drugs which can prevent tumor lysis syndrome when they are used early on, along with the chemotherapy. Most of these stop production of uric acid and there is a brand new one released a couple of years back and it works wonders.

Usually more sx: There are established Algorithmic approach to risk assessment of tumor lysis syndrome. The patient has laboratory tests for example serum potassium, phosphorus, calcium creatinine and uric acid tested. The doctor or hematology/oncology team will interpret the tests and examine the patient. Decisions for treatment will be based on findings.

That's really tiny: Paraneoplastic syndromes from occult lung cancer are not subtle. You're paralyzed, or very weak and can barely get out of bed, or you are suddenly blind, or are very and inexplicably hyponatremic, or you are stir-crazy. I'd dismiss paraneoplastic cushingism unless your face is strikingly red and puffy. 1 mm "spots" are extremely common in healthy folks; if considering surgery, be wary.

Don't delay: Cauda equina syndrome is the loss of sensation or strength in the legs, along with loss of bowel and bladder control. It can be caused by tumor masses compressing nerve roots emanating from the lower part of the spinal cord. It is a medical emergency that may require surgery or radiation to prevent a permanent loss of function.

Distal metastasis.: Usually carcinoid tumors cause more syndromal symptoms than just flushing in the late stage. (Diarrhea, weight loss, etc. should occur). 5-HIAA is a metabolite (breakdown product) of serotonin; but also of tryptophan (protein found in foods) - the levels are unreliable for diagnosis but OK as a screening tool. Not known: Carcinoid tumors of the bowel are neuroendocrine tumors that have a high propensity of spreading to the liver and producing the carcinoid syndrome.  The lesions arise anywhere in the bowel and respond to the same chemo used for small cell neuroendocrine of lung.  They even arise in organs like pancreas, like Jobs had but are not pancreatic tumors.. Cause is not known but possibly viral in etiology

Yes: Cushing's syndrome is any cause that lead to high cortisol level in the blood. Taking corticosteroids (prednisone for example) at high doses for an extended amount of time may lead to cushing's syndrome.

Unlikely: Based on your posted symptoms of abdominal pain, fatigue, and appendicitis, it does not seem likely that they are related to carcinoid.
