Accepted Answer

Yes: If the hips get an amount of radiation above what this area can handle this complication can happen.  This is why there is treatment planning and doctors limit radiation doses to the area of concern. However if treated no more than the maximum tolerance their is still 5 percent chance of complications at that maximum level.

They do not!: Since they lower Estradiol levels, they can make osteoporosis more likely, but the do not cause osteonecrosis of the jaw! obviously used for estrogen receptor positive breast ca, Evista (raloxifene) would be a good trade for your tamoxifen, in the sense that it would prevent osteoporosis as well as breast ca!

i took zometa iv 7yrs ago. now i have osteoporosis & was prescribed an oral similar drugs. will this cause osteonecrosis of jaw ? my tooth hurts!

Probably not!: Osteonecrosis usually manifests as a gum with exposed bone.  While you may develop the issue after a tooth extraction or a bad abscess  or even a nasty laceration of the gums, the probability of it happening as you described is low.  Never the less, you are not going to feel comfortable without seeing your dentist about the pain you are feeling.

i have both tarlov cysts & osteonecrosis.   found out about them at the same time. can the cysts cause the osteonecrosis?

No: the cysts are fluid filled and exert little pressure on the surrounding bone.  Changes in the bone if they in fact do occur takes decades.  Osteonecrosis of the bone signifies a loss of blood supply to that bone.

Osteoporosis: Steroid therapy for any reason can cause thinning of the bones.  This is a serious problem for children with muscular dystrophy, asthma, juvenile arthritis, as well as cancer.  Calcium, vitamin d, and sunshine is very important.  Bone density measurements can be followed with special DEXA scans.

Can lose function: One can lose function of that body as it has died and hence can lose the ability to use it. So, if it occurs in the jaw, potentially eating may be a problem as if the bones are dead, teeth may fall out. If it is in the foot, common at the second metatarsal head, the person can have pain and swelling at that part of the foot which would make it  difficult to walk.

OSTEONECROSIS:  Osteonecrosis is unusual in a younger patient. Osteonecrosis of the jaw can be from radiation /Trauma/Infection and Meds.  It can be treated with pain Meds /PT and surgery of it worsens acutely
