Dehydration : Dehydration can occur easily when a patient has an infection.  An infection can cause a fever, even when the patient isn't always aware, and the skin flushes, with more fluid evaporating.  In addition, if a patient isn't feeling well, they often don't drink or eat as much as they typically do.  Patient's who are on other medications, including cardiovascular medications, can be more sensitive to the effects of dehydration.  Signs of allergic reaction  to a medication usually includes rash that is usually hives, swelling, itching, or shortness of breath.

Nitrofurantoin ?: Nitrofurantoin antibiotic is very often  used to treat urinary tract infections. Allergic reactions to this is rather uncommon. However, when it happens the skin reactions could show up as itching, swelling of skin, eczema, and even serious conditions such as stevens-johnson syndrome. Other symptoms affecting gastrointestinal , urinary, blood disorders, liver, and heart disorders can happen.

Of course: The urine can be cultured to see what bacteria is in there, and which antibiotics can be used. If needed, an allergist can check for true allergies to antibiotics, and help select the safest one to use. If UTI symptoms are slight and they go away without antibiotics, that's ok... as long as a patient does close follow-up to check for recurrences or other bladder, kidney, vulvo-vaginal issues.

In specific patients: Hemolysis is typically described in G6PD deficient patients, specific ethnic groups. Medical history is critical and a hematology evaluation may be needed for proper diagnosis and follow up.

can nitrofurantoin cause diarrhea even if codeine is already being taken for diarrehea?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Unfortunately, antibiotic-induced diarrhea persists as long as you continue the med. If you are not having severe abdominal pains, fevers, bloody diarrhea, then you can try some Imodium (loperamide) ad. If you develop some of those other symptoms, let your doctor know because you may have something else more serious going on.

june 1/20 while taking nitrofurantoin but i finished taking the nitrofurantoin do i take my birth control for 7 days to be protected all over again incase nitrofurantoin cause less effectiveness or am i safe?

BCP's/antibiotics : If you continued your use of "June 1/20" , any effects of diminished protection from the oral bcp's which might increase risks of pregnancy would produce breakthrough bleeding (estrogen withdrawal).  If no bleeding has occurred during antibiotic use, continue using oral bcp's punctually and pregnancy protection should not be decreased.
