Redness or discharge: in the eyes of a newborn.  Can be viral or bacterial.  Historically we have used erythromycin eye ointment  to prevent infection from chlamydia or gonorrhea.  Other common bacterial infections are also prevented with this treatment.

No go to doctor: Most eye infection in children are viral. There is no treatment for this.  With that said, newborns are more separable to bacterial infection. These are serious and can cause significant eye problems. Other causes of apparent "eye infection" can be up blocked tear duct. Your newborn must be examined promptly.

: It is possible. Tear drain into the nasal cavity and an infection in the eye can theoretically spread to the sinuses. More likely the same virus can conjunctivitis, rhinitis and sinusitis.
