"mild" mood swings: Cyclothymia is a chronic mood disorder w recurrent or cyclic multi-day episodes of mild depression & hypomania. Depression may include loss of interest, poor concentration, anxiety, fatigue. Hypomania may include extra energy, increased focus, hyperactivity, less need for sleep. See your doc if this is you. Note: violent or suicidal thoughts are very serious and warrant immediate medical attention.

Mild form of bipolar: Cyclothymia is a significantly milder version of bipolar disorder.  It have at least a two year history w/ no more than 2 mths in a row w/out either a high or a low. Although both extremes are not as severe, they are not within normal range either and they can take a toll on overall quality of life. Some think it can lead into full bipolar, especially w/out therapy. Talk with a therapist - best!

Cyclothymia is a chronic mood disorder with alternating depressive and hypomanic episodes.  It is similar to bipolar disorder but the episodes are less severe in cyclothymia.

Treatment is with mood stabilizing medications.

Please see your primary physician to rule out medical causes and he/she can refer you to a psychiatrist for diagnosis.

There is no set: Periodicity for the cycling in cyclothymia. It can be rapid, ultrarapid, or ultra-ultrarapid. This means that it can be within the course of a month, the course of a week, or the course of a day. Most commonly the episodes do not cycle very rapidly, but on occasion, especially if there is an antidepressant on board, I have seen it cycle daily. Best wishes.

Usually, these individuals do not have serious impairment in relationships due to affairs or risky behaviors, spend too much money or act in a way that endangers their life or others.

You can think of it as a mild kind of bipolar.

That is to say, cyclothymics do experience similar mood swings, but not to the intensity of those experienced by those suffering from bipolar disorder. A psychiatric evaluation is in order with appropriate mood stabilizing meds as needed and a referral to a reputable psychotherapist who specializes in mood disorders.

Sweet sixteen: Please find a way to enjoy these years. I'm not forgetting that they are often stressful and painful emotionally. But, if this diagnosis is what's concerning you, please try to let it go. Adolescence can include these symptoms quite naturally - also, few treatments would prescribe risky drugs for it. Talk therapy or counseling may help you focus on  more useful things in life. Relax, enjoy, learn.

can someone have both bpd and cyclothymia?

Yes: If bpd means bipolar disorder, then by definition there has been at least  1 episode of mania.  The DX of cyclothymic disorder allows for hypomania, but not for a manic episode. That said, however, there may be times that bipolar disorder acts like cyclothymic disorder for periods of time.
