are there any natural treatments (diatary supplements) that help with alport syndrome?

Alport: Alport syndrome is difficult to manage as you probably know already. I don't know of any natural treatments that will help more than what you are already receiving from you kidney specialist. That said, it won't hurt you to ask when you have your next appointment.

what age are children usually diagnosed with alport syndrome? what are symptoms? are pregnant women checked on genetic test for this? would i know im a carrier?

Accepted Answer

: The earliest sign of Alport syndrome is microscopic hematuria (blood in the urine with microscopic exam) so urine should be checked in childhood. Impaired hearing and ocular abnormalities are the other common findings. We do not do routine genetic test in pregnancy, we only do if you have a family history. You can be a carrier if your immediate family member (parent/sibling) has this condition.

does dot and fleck retinopathy look specific if it's alport?can you have a small amount of mottling on retina and not be alport ?

Yes and no: With a family history of Alport disease and/or renal failure, the dot-and-fleck retinopathy is diagnostic. "A peripheral retinopathy in the mother of a male with hematuria suggests X-linked inheritance, and central retinopathy or lenticonus in a female means that recessive disease is likely. Ocular examination, retinal photography, and optical coherence tomography are widely available" for Dx.

Varies: This is a neuropsychiatric disorder most often coexisting with other psychiatric diagnoses like bipolar or schizophrenia.It can also follow head trauma or general accident. It is very rare. The afflicted believe they are either dead (deny living) or believe body parts are missing ( deny vital organs) antidepressants, anti-psychotics, mood stabilisers and electric shock are used successfully.
