can you be allergy tested for iodine constrast dye before ct scan?

Not aware of testing: The risk of an adverse reaction to non ionic IV contrast dye is very low, less than 1 in 100 injections.  Most of the reactions are mild and easily treated.  Severe reactions occur in 1-2 per 10, 000 injections of IV non ionic contrast.

If a person was severely allergic to many different things, perhaps a consultation with an allergist could be obtained.

Family history = not: This is an area of controversy and ongoing research. The main risk factors for reaction are thought to be: prior adverse reaction to contrast agents, urticaria, an allergic history to drugs other than contrast agents, contrast agent concentration &gt;70%, age &lt;50 years, and total contrast agent dose &gt;65 g. Contrast reaction is not like other 'allergic' reactions and family history is not a known risk

i have an allergy to ct contrast dye (rapid heart, flushing, sob, feel like death) can i have mri with contrast? doc ordered one and i'm nervous.

Accepted Answer

Inform doctor: YOu need to talk to your doctor and get premedicated prior to the procedure.  If your doctor can't provide you an answer, consult an allergist prior.

i lost my ability to smell 8 years ago. i have been to ent specialists, had allergy tests done and even gone for a cat scan. i don't have any allergies and thankfully, nothing abnormal from the scan. what else could be causing this? how can i fix it?

After viral infectio: Many different causes. Likely a complication of a viral infection that caused loss of nerve of olfaction function. Was there a history of severe nose / sinus infections or meningitis ? Any major head trauma with fractures at the skull base ? 
Rarely it could also be an early sign of neuro degenerative disorders like Parkinson diseases.

i have chronic clogged ears, went to ent nothing even got tested for allergies and nothing, and cat scan. dont know what to do?

Blocked ears: Sometimes we can't find a cause for this problem; we have two aerosol nasal sprays that can be tried.The aerosols often get back through the nasal passages to the eustachian tube openings that connect to the throat better than aqueous sprays. They are called zetonna and qnasl.  Some of my patients also find it helpful to take sudafed on the mornings they are blocked. Try a milk free diet too.

Be diligent: Good news is your MR and CT are normal so far.  If you have not already, I would see an ENT Dr. or a GI, even both and one can do a visual inspection of your throat are by performing an "NPL" (The ENT dr) and the GI can do an "EGD" to examine your esophagus and both would asses for any increased acid or mucus production. slight tingle in left hand(pink&ring)tingles in left foot too/ clean blood work and cat scan! super nervous. i have been getting allergy/sinus headach?

Calm down: Don't let your nerves get the best of you. What body part got the cat scan and why?
I would see an orthopedist since there is hand and foot involvement and let them conclude if you have isolated nerve compressions i.E carpal and tarsal tunner syndrome or some radiculpathy more proximally i.E the back, or some systemic disorder. I do not think the sinus headache is related. Feel better.

See below: Allergic reaction to ct scan contrast may range from mild skin rash and itching to severe skin rash and cardiac arrest. Patients at risk are those with previous adverse reactions to iodine-based contrast materials, history of asthma, history of allergy. Contrast reaction may be reduced or prevented if appropriately treated before the scan, but this is not 100%.

what are the chances of having a severe allergic reaction to the cat scan dye they use?

Accepted Answer

Low: Severe reactions to ct scan dyes are low unless you have a history of a reaction, are on certain medications that work through your kidneys or you are very dehydrated.  It is always good to questions why you need the ct scan in the first place as it also exposes you to more radiation.  Will the results of the scan change how you are treated?.. And that can outweigh the small risks of the procedure.

Accepted Answer

Hard to tell.: It is possible that you are seeing the convolutions of the brain cortex which kind off make multiple folds into the brain substance on the surface of the brain.
