It depends: This is highly dependent on the type of fracture you had, location of the fracture and how long it had been in a cast. Most fractures are healed in 6-8 weeks, but the final decision should be made by the person most familiar with your particular situation.

my husband broke his wrist and claim is through federal workman's comp. it's been a month and he's a half cast still. he hasn't been able to find a hand and wrist specialist that takes federal workman's comp. can he switch to a wrist splint for now?

: Call the involved insurance carrier and explain the predicament.  After about 6 weeks you can usually switch to a splint. Do you know what the 3 week X-Ray showed? Often a 6 week fracture is also done but in simple fractures it may be skipped. Hopefully the insurance company will accept to a non covered physician for cast removal and clearance for switching to a splint&amp; OK physical therapy.

i fractured my hand and broke a small piece of bone of in the middle of my hand. the er dr put me in splint until i saw the ortho, will this need surgery or a cast and the piece of bone can stay there?

Depends: Without seeing an x-ray or knowing what is "broken off" it is impossible to know what is wrong with your hand/wrist ; therefore how to treat it.  X-rays of "wrist sprains" commonly show a small fleck of bone on the top of the wrist.  The fleck is significant only becuz that is where the ligament was injured.  Remember wrist sprains can take as long to heal as a fracture.

Accepted Answer

Varies: If you have a distal 5th metacarpal fracture, then some variant of a "clam digger" splint or cast is applied.   This involves immobilizing the 4th and 5th finger, and flexing them down an bout 70-99 degrees.  There is no benefit or need to immobilize the thumb, index, or middle finger.

broken my scaphoid in ny wrist im now in a cast but really want to knowif its possible for me to have a splint instead.. would it heal still?

Depends on location: If the scaphoid is broken in the middle of the bone or closer to the forearm, healing is more difficult. These areas of the scaphoid do not have a very good blood supply. Don't Worry : If the doctor gave you a choice, then you have to trust that it was a real choice and the splint is as good as the cast - that is, of course, as long as you wear the splint. If you don't wear the splint, that is a different story. If you have an issue with the splint call the office and ask to come in sooner rather than later to adjust the splint or switch to a cast.

i still have pain when i had the cast on but the hospital put a splint on now but my wrist still hurts a lot what could the problem be because of pain?

Needs cr scan of wru: If still hurting the problem could still be present needs cr scan of wrist but. Sometimes pain does not go completely even after wrist is healed

can you splint your own wrist or do i need a cast?

Depends: If you know is not broken then you can use ace band, a wrist splint/brace.  Cast if for fractures.  Should not use cast if you dont have a fracture. Get professional attention if you are having pain, or significant swelling.
