Could be CTS: It sounds like it could be carpal tunnel syndrome (cts)which is a type of nerve compression, but this will often affect other fingers rather than just the thumb. Is it on the lateral or outside of the thumb? It could be a tenosynovitis  as well. If you look up a test called a finklestein test, you can check yourself and see if its that. If you have neck pain, it could also be a radiculitis.

Need evaluation: Snowboard injuries can be simple (sprain) or complex (fracture or ruptured ligament).  Persistent pain after a fall on an outstretched hand could be a sign of a significant injury.  Be sure to see a board certified hand surgeon for a complete evaluation and to rule out serious injuries that can lead to chronic pain and visibility, such as carpal ligament rupture and scaphoid fracture.

Depends: This can be a systemic disease process (neuropathy, hiv) affecting multiple nerves at once. Carpal tunnel affect the hand specifically, not the arm. You can have two pinched nerves possibly, but one tries to explain symptoms by the most simple explanation. Consider spinal cord issues, which would affect arm and leg simultaneously.

9 mths ago had carpal tunnel surgery, normal recovery, woke up this morning and thumb severe pain can't do anything, when bent, pnky/mddle flex too?

Likely unrelated: Likely unrelated to the carpal tunnel. The more common issue with bending of fingers that can come on out of the blue is flexor tendonitis, more commonly known as trigger finger. Often this is self limiting, but occasionally OTC medications such as Advil (ibuprofen) and Alleve may help, assuming it's ok for you to take those (check with your doctor). If not, get it checked out, usually easy to treat.

CTS: Not necessarily. Severity of your CTS warrants discussing options regarding treatment, with your Orthopedic surgeon.

i have 2 children and i am type 1 diabetic for 21 yrs and i have severe nerve pain in my arms n hands for past 5 yrs isit neuropathy or carpal tunnel?

Could be either: Diabetic neuropathy usually affects the feet before it affects the hands and arms. However, your symptoms could be coming either from carpal tunnel or from peripheral neuropathy. 

Symptoms from carpal tunnel are usually most intense in the thumb, index and middle fingers and are worsened by repetitive motion. Clumsiness, and weakness in the hands also occurs commonly in cts. An EMG is needed.

No: by definition the issues of CTS are at the site where the nerves enter through the wrist (carpal) bones. Abnormalities in the further up the arm may have some shared symptoms, but it would not be called CTS.

Depends: Most light activities are initiated 2 weeks post-op, with lifting around 6 weeks.  Progressed thereafter as tolerated.  Many patients experience discomfort across the base of the palm for up to 6 months, particularly with heavier pushing.  This is often referred to as "pillar pain".

how long is recovery for a 2nd carpal tunnel surgery?

Accepted Answer

Varies: It varies somewhat based upon surgical technique used- endoscopic verses open.  That being said, however, most patients are doing real well by about 3weeks.
