Exercise -carpal tun: Certain exercises done improperly can cause injury to the wrist.  Swelling in the wrist can result in narrowing of the carpal tunnel and thereby cause syptoms associated with carpel tunnel syndrome.

Accepted Answer

History and physical: Usually one can diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome just by doing a good history and physical.  People complain of numbness and tingling and/or weakness in the thumb and next two or three fingers.  People may also have pain in this distribution if when you tap on the median nerve of the wrist.  Other tests which can confirm a diagnosis include nerve conduction studies and electromyography.

Yes: Carpal tunnel is a condition in the wrist where a nerve (the median nerve) is "pinched" by tendons that surround it as it travels through an area in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. The symptoms generally occur after the wrist has been flexed (making the carpal tunnel smaller) . Symptoms may resolve with antiinflammatory meds, rest and splinting. Sometimes surgery may be needed to fix it.

Injections, surgery: You can avoid carpal tunnel syndrome (cts) by wearing braces on your wrists, but once you have it, the best treatment is surgery.  You can try injections of steroids, but cts doesn't respond well to this.  
It is very important that if you have weakness or numbness that you seek an operation right away; this kind of damage can be permanent if it's not treated promptly!

Keep wrist straight: Try to avoid any lifting with the wrist in flexion or extension...basically need to keep the wrist in neutral position.  Any flexing or extending of the wrist increases the pressure on the nerve in the carpal canal

No: Standard therapy for carpal tunnel is: 1)  night splints, 2) anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen or naproxen, 3) avoidance of the repetitive activities that caused the carpal tunnel syndrome.  Sometimes, we inject steroids into the area of the carpal tunnel.  Failing these treatments, we usually recommend a surgery called carpal tunnel release.  In most cases, your symptoms will resolve.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Carpal tunnel syndrome is associated with repetitive keyboard activities, and if there is flexion/extension of your wrists while texting, you may acquire the problem.  It is relatively benign and reversible, however.
